Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. What is co-learning, and how is it different from a traditional homeschool co-op?
At SOL Learning Center, co-learning is a shared journey of discovery where children are encouraged to take ownership of their education while being supported by Gardeners (educators), peers, and family members. Unlike a traditional homeschool co-op where parents primarily instruct their own children, co-learning at SOL is a collaborative, project-based experience where children engage in Math, Language Arts, Science, and integrated projects that connect social studies and art.
Rather than focusing on passive instruction, our model encourages problem-solving, hands-on exploration, and real-world connections—allowing children to grow both academically and socially in a vibrant, mixed-age learning environment.
2. Where are you located?
SOL Learning Center is located in Clinton, Maryland. Our learning spaces include yurts, outdoor classrooms, and garden areas, creating a unique environment for children to explore and grow beyond traditional classroom settings.
3. What is a yurt?
A yurt is a round, tent-like structure with a wooden frame and insulated walls, traditionally used by nomadic communities. At SOL Learning Center, our yurt serves as a comfortable and inviting learning space where children can tinker, collaborate, and explore new ideas. It provides an open-concept environment that encourages creativity while offering a cozy and safe space for focused learning.
4. What ages do you serve?
We welcome learners ages 6 to 14. Our multi-age environment allows children to collaborate, mentor, and learn from one another in ways that deepen their understanding and social skills:
🌱 Sprouts (Ages 6-8) – Early learners engage in foundational skills through hands-on, play-based, and exploratory learning. They develop curiosity, problem-solving, and a love for discovery.
🌿 Seedlings (Ages 9-11) – Learners build independence and deepen their critical thinking through project-based collaboration. They work in teams, research solutions, and make real-world connections.
🌸 Buds (Ages 12-14) – Older learners take on leadership roles, mentor younger peers, and engage in complex problem-solving activities that challenge them to apply their knowledge in innovative ways.
At SOL Learning Center, project-based learning is at the heart of everything we do. Mixed-age groups encourage peer mentorship, creativity, and cooperative learning, while our Gardeners (educators) differentiate instruction to meet each child’s unique needs and challenge them to grow.
